Residence

C.S and Vaidehi Sriram

The residence was conceived to serve as a retreat from the hectic day-to-day city life. The L-shaped configuration that has been a staple across several, famous residences the world over has been adopted and modified for this design. The L-shaped residence encloses a landscaped backyard offering unique views from every portion of the house. The landscaped core is shielded from the external access road by the built mass of the residence.

CSMB(Compressed stabilized mud blocks) was used as the predominant material for this residence. These blocks are easily manufactured and the machine can be operated with very little need for specialized skill training. The CSM blocks are hence a perfect blend of modern technology with ancient mud-based construction and can be easily adapted by the local economy. The entire structure is essentially an RCC framed structure. However concrete usage has been minimised by the use of filler slabs which have the additional benefit of offering better thermal performance.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

  • Every room overlooks the landscaped interior and is cross-ventilated

  •  The backyard has been landscaped to resemble the look of a natural setting over time. With the passage of time, the backyard would become a feature that seems to have existed untouched for a long time.

  • Bamboo railings are a unique feature of this project
