Security Shed at Dayalbagh

Dayalbagh Educational Institute

The security shed was constructed as a prototype shelter at Dayalbagh University in Agra. The shed was an attempt to showcase the performance of Bamboo in residential construction and examine its durability and strength. The entire structure was constructed using locally available materials employing local skills and labor. All details used in the structure have a past precedent in the vernacular traditions of the locality, thereby making its execution simple and suited to the local economics of the place.

The project was featured in the DEI journals and newspapers, and it was a proof concept that led to the start of bamboo courses in 2006, in a collaboration between DEI and CGBMT.

ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

  • The design was inspired by arcades found in local monuments. A juxtaposition of solid plastered walls, arched jaali openings, and arched openings was used to achieve a structure that was visually light and created an interesting play with light and shadows.

  • The composition of figures and ground on the wall elevations ensure the interiors remain well ventilated keeping the structure cool compared to its surroundings.

  • The roof overhangs shade the structure keeping it cool even in the hot Agra summers

  • The entire structure refers to the local context and serves as a welcoming beacon upon entering the campus of the institute
