Pavillion at World Bamboo Workshop

World Bamboo Organization

The pavilion was constructed in a short span as part of the World Bamboo Workshop conducted at Imphal in 2019 in association with CGBMT. The structure that stands today is the result of a 4-way collaboration and project execution by Bamboo Artisans, Motivated Individuals, Local Community members, and Field experts. Demonstrating to the local populace the applications of bamboo technologies in construction and its cross-over with modern construction techniques the workshop was to serve as a guiding beacon for the broader region, where bamboo has historically been one of the most important building materials.

By collaborating with the local populace and exposing them to modern technologies, the structure serves to act as an inspiration for similar future projects in the area. Motivated volunteers from far and wide also attended the workshop to better understand bamboo technologies and have hands-on practical experience.

The curved shape of the structure was achieved by utilizing the wonderful flexibility yet strength of bamboo. The amazing tensile properties of this material enable the creation of a curved shell structure which by means of its shape and inter-linkage of different members obtain its overall strength and rigidity. Once the shell was fabricated on a base scaffolding, the entire structure was plastered using a unique technique based on soaking jute bags in cement and wrapping the soaked jute bags on the structure. This process of plastering not only speeds up construction but also offers good durability to the structure.
