Earth House

Private Residence

This project served as a springing point for the exploration of mud-based construction at CGBMT. Designed to be a humble residence for Shri Gurudayal Saran, a long-time project execution expert associated with CGBMT since its inception, the structure had to be completely sustainable and eco-friendly.

A G+1 residence in the plan on a compact 40x60 site, this design attempted to show how one can retain their connection with nature while building on a small footprint as is often the case in most urban areas. The plan is centred around living areas that vary in privacy and the stepped form creates multiple terraces at different heights. A courtyard at the back end serves as the green lung for the entire residence. The semicircular double-height living room on the ground floor serves as the core of the house.

The building was constructed by Artisans and Local labour. The building pioneered the use of CSM blocks in the locality, showcasing its applicability in the fast-developing city of Bengaluru, thereby offering an alternate model of development.

Constructed with stabilised earth blocks and bamboo corrugated sheets the structure remains cool during the day. The Stabilised mud blocks additionally avoid the need to use kiln-fired clay bricks, which have a very high embodied energy. CSM Block also has the benefit of being able to be produced on the site as per requirement using simple machinery and little labour. The machines used to make CSM blocks can be easily operated by most local craftspersons with little training. Traditionally mud based constructions were characterised by small fenestrations. However, this project experimented and pioneered a technique of creating large full-height openings using mud blocks.

Traditional oxide flooring has been used for the residence keeping it cool even in the hot summers in line with the vernacular homes of Karnataka.

The south-facing slope of the roof incorporates solar panels that generate energy for the house. The house is designed with RWH system and DEWAT system.
