Bamboo Bus Shelter

Manasaram Architects

CGBMT stands for empowering the local community and giving back to society by means of positive contributions. The Bamboo bus shelter not very far from the studio and workshop of CGBMT was an initiative undertaken to support the public transit systems in the immediate vicinity. Modern society has begun to accept steel or RCC boxes as the norm for a bus shelter. This was an attempt to upend the norm and create an essential piece of public infrastructure using sustainable materials. Commemorating World Bamboo Day, the shelter was inaugurated in 2014 to proclaim to the world a new era of public infrastructure design.

Simple bamboo frames were used to make a workable and practical bus shelter serving local needs. Bamboo being a vernacular material that can be assembled using locally available knowledge, the project sought to showcase a better approach to constructing public facilities over the more widespread factory-based approach. Bamboo mat boards offer shade and respite to tired travelers waiting to board buses. The structure stands to this day serving its intended purpose- a testament to the power of natural building materials.
