Delhi University

Located on the banks of the Yamuna River in North Delhi- The sole purpose was to rejuvenate the rich biodiversity of the Yamuna River basin.

Delhi University chose Bamboo as the chief building material for this project. The project aims to showcase the application of indigenous knowledge for solutions to modern problems, and the use of Bamboo as a solution to rural problems and impetus to the rural economy.

The project was completed in 20 days.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: 15 M LONG BAMBOO BRIDGE

The 1.2 m wide bridge spans 15 m and is based on a simple arch truss.  Flooring is made of 2-2.5” Bamboo while a bamboo mat corrugated sheet is used on the roof. The bridge demonstrates that Bamboo is a viable material for constructing sustainable and environment-friendly bridges. Being a locally available material with prior familiarity with the rural economy, can prove to be an alternative to steel bridges thereby bridging the accessibility gap, especially in rural areas.

Salient features

  • Rapid construction schedule- Constructed in just 20 days

  • No use of Steel in the bulk of the structure- Wooden brackets support the bamboo at every 10’.

  • Easy to construct using locally available knowledge

  • Easy to repair and maintain with considerations for removal of specific components if necessary

  • A large proportion of bamboo can be reused even after a few decades
