Bamboo Museum Palampur

Manasaram Architects

To flourish sustainably, museums must value and protect natural and cultural environments and remain sensitive toward their impact on visitors. A pioneer project, this is the only Bamboo museum in India. Much like the structure, even the museum exhibits showcase the usage of bamboo in various methods of construction and interiors. The entire museum was constructed using locally available knowledge and materials and seeks to continue to provide an impetus to the local economy. The museum’s external elevation has similarly been designed to blend into the naturally wooded surroundings. The natural textures of the exposed bamboo and wood add a sense of warmth and naturality to the entire design intervention.

The three pyramid-like structures rising over the museum are clad with bamboo giving it a unique aesthetic quality and also a hint to what lies in the museum. The central dome is glazed. The roofing for the exhibition hall and the passage is made of a Bamboo Mat Corrugated Sheet (BMCS). The flooring is made of cement oxide in a combination of red and black. The walls are made of Bamboo Crete Walls. The inner wall is of plaster or round bamboo finish or Bamboo Mat Board. The external faces of the wall all have exposed bamboo to add a unique textural quality to the elevation of the museum. Bamboo Mat Boards in combination with glazing are used for the doors. The wood for the doors is of neem and other locally available seasoned wood.
