Paatre Exhibition

Karnataka Crafts Council

Paatre was an exhibition conducted at Karnataka’s famous art college- Chitrakala Parishad, curated by the Craft Council of Karnataka. The exhibition sought to showcase the vessels that have been an intrinsic part of Indian culture since time immemorial. However, a need was felt to showcase all exhibits in a rustic background to capture the spirit of Rural India.

CGBMT was hence responsible for designing and fabricating stalls and bamboo-based decorative items for the exhibition. One of the main objectives was to ensure all fabrication was done in an eco-friendly sustainable manner. Exhibitions and events are often short term and a lot of materials get wasted in fabricating items for such exhibitions. By using natural materials only, the exhibition sought to introduce the concept of a green exhibition with a low impact on our environment.

Outdoor awnings and a bamboo-based truss roof were conceptualized and fabricated to shade the artisans selling their wares and performing live displays from the hot summer sun. Special bamboo walls were fabricated to showcase Chittara artworks as a backdrop to every stall. The interior exhibition space was decorated using the column covers and waves reused from the G20 exhibition- demonstrating the flexibility of bamboo and its ability to be used over multiple lifetimes. Lighting was the highlight of the exhibition with most of the lighting from the earlier exhibition being repurposed to fit the new context. A special bamboo basket chandelier was created to create a dynamic display of vessels fixed onto the ceiling appearing to defy gravity. Special bamboo frames and stands were created for all banners which are durable and can be reused for several other events.
